State Representative Dorothy L. Hukill (R-Port Orange)

Dorothy L. Hukill is a native of New York City, New York. She attended Hunter College, CUNY and graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (Elementary Education). She worked as a public school teacher in New York for grades 1-5 before returning to school at Columbia University. She graduated Columbia University’s Teachers College in 1970 with a Master of Arts degree in Speech Pathology/Audiology. After a few years she decided to make a career change and become an attorney. She graduated with her Law degree in 1978 from St. John’s University. Dorothy has been a practicing attorney ever since. After having a child, she moved to the Daytona Beach area in 1988. In Florida, she has established a law practice that focuses primarily on Probate and Real Estate Law. As an active member of the community she ran and won an election to the Ponce Inlet Town Council. Dorothy later ran and won as Councilwoman to the City of Port Orange.

After serving on the council for several years she was selected Vice-Mayor. In 2000, Dorothy ran and became Mayor of Port Orange. She led several economic development initiatives during her tenure as Mayor. In 2004, after a tough race in a competitive district, Dorothy won her election to the Florida House of Representatives for District 28. In 2006, she was re-elected with 57% of the vote. Known as a diligent worker, she continues to be an accessible leader promoting Republican principles of less government, fiscal responsibility, and more accountability in the State House.

Representative Hukill currently serves as Vice Chair of the Committee on Constitution & Civil Law, on the Committees on Post Secondary Education, Business Regulation, and on the Safety & Security Council.
