Jobs and the Economy

Central Florida was hit hard by the economic recession, and many citizens are still struggling to get back on their feet. Dorothy’s top priority is to improve our economy and help put unemployed Floridians back to work.

But Dorothy knows that government should not be a burden in the effort to get our economy moving again. Florida businesses must have the freedom to create jobs.

That’s why Dorothy has voted to provide incentives for new businesses that bring jobs to Florida, while also encouraging local businesses to expand and hire within our communities. She’s also helped cut unnecessary red-tape and regulations that have done little except make it harder for our hometown businesses to grow.

As State Senator, Dorothy will continue to fight for policies that promote a healthy economy in Florida and help create high-quality jobs for our citizens.

Taxes and Spending

Florida families have had to tighten their belts to make ends meet during tough times. Florida’s government should be no different, and higher taxes on regular Floridians aren’t the answer. Instead, our state government should keep spending in check, eliminate waste, and pass on the savings to taxpayers.

Dorothy believes in fiscal responsibility. That’s why she has consistently voted to balance the state budget without raising taxes, even voting to cut her own pay rather than spend more taxpayer money. She stood up for all of us when she said no to hundreds of millions of dollars in new fees on Florida families. And Dorothy voted for the largest property tax cut in the state’s history, while also helping to repeal the “intangibles” tax on retirement income for seniors.

Commitment to Education

As a parent and former public elementary school teacher, Dorothy knows firsthand the importance of great schools. A great education is the key to a better future for every child, and we must give students the tools they need to be successful in the global economy.

That’s why Dorothy voted this year to invest an additional $1 billion in our K-12 schools. She’s fought for reforms that improve standards and accountability in schools, while empowering schools to provide better pay to great teachers. Dorothy will continue standing up for our children and our schools in the Florida Senate.
